During the UoG year, students’ will be able to build upon their previously acquired technical and operational managerial competencies learned at SHML. They will also develop confidence and improve their abilities in a range of vital management skills, including Informational Technology, Financial Management, Marketing and Human Resources. Upon completion of the program, students will be set for future success as they venture out into the global hospitality and tourism industries or post-graduate study.
This honours degree program fully prepares students to enter the hospitality industry with confidence and particularly as it develops basic management theories and competencies using a range of teaching and learning processes and in-depth individual research. The program courses are:
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS
This module focuses on strategic management accounting. It will address the importance of financial information to managers. Students will also develop their ability to apply financial techniques; analyse financial information and evaluate company financial statements.
COMMUNICATION AND MARKETING
This course module will cover the theoretical concepts and nature of marketing communications (IMC) and its application in practice developing integrated marketing communications, strategies and plans. New digital media development and deployment will be considered. This module develops understanding of practice supported by underpinning theory. Also it will show students the key aspects if developing an IMC including the role of new digital media.
NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT/ENTREPRENEURSHIP
New Business development provides a complex and challenging opportunity for students to bring together knowledge and skill developed during their studies in a focused module which deals with real world applications of such learning. The module addresses the new product development process (NPD) including concept/idea generation, market research and evaluation methods and the commercialisation process, methods to assess the market potential for new products including product positioning, testing, test marketing and NPD launch are studied. The assessments is the development of a business plan which allows students to integrate learning and to draw upon many concepts learnt offer the past three levels of study.
STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
This unit brings together the management of human resources as a function of management and the specialist role of the HR manager within the leisure industry. The course will critically review how the modern approach to management of HR contributes to business objectives. The program also evaluates the implications of economic, political, social and technological factors, which impact upon the management of human recourses in the leisure industry, and the way it applies techniques to employee resourcing, relations and employee development as well as exercising the judgement within a working knowledge of employment legislation, and the concept of diversity.
CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT
Hospitality is a dynamic and changing industry which is greatly influenced by external factors, this module will allow students to analyse contemporary issues to underpin informed discussion and debate. The focus will be on current up-to-date issues that impact on modern management practices within the industry.
INTERNATIONAL RESORT MANAGEMENT
This course component integrates the theoretical concepts and applied management tools learnt in previous modules and applies these in strategic planning and management approach across a range of diverse products and services such as mixed use resorts, casinos and emerging developments. The range of resorts encompassed in the module includes; lodges, all-inclusive destinations, adventures, eco, sports and mega tourism.
HOSPITALITY GLOBALISATION
This element, exams how hospitality organisations strategically manage their businesses in a global environment; It will evaluate corporate advantage to be gained through effective management of geographical dispersion, efficiencies of scale and the use of international e-business.
Students will synthesise the applications of differing organisational systems for international hospitality business practices such as international financing and marketing, joint ventures and strategic alliances.
CORPORATE STRATEGY
This module is designed to provide the student with an understanding of strategic management principles, theory and analytical frameworks, which are then applied to the leisure industry to consider how organisations can manage their resources and competition, to achieve long run competitive edge.
INVESTIGATIVE STUDY
This course provides students with the opportunity to study a self-managed, analytical piece of work where they will conduct a literature-based academic investigation related to hospitality. Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to learn independently, research, analyse, synthesise and evaluate appropriate literature from a range of hospitality management titles that will be made available.
BACHELOR OF ARTS (Hons) DEGREE
Students who wish to graduate with an the honours degree must have maintained at least a 4.0 average prior to entry into semester 7 and have maintained at least a 70% average in semester 7.
